Water quality improvement

Delivering methanol is part of the process at Budds Farm Wastewater Treatment Works

Some of our biggest projects are schemes which improve the quality of wastewater recycled back into the environment. We carried out £87 million worth of extensive upgrades to the nutrient removal facilities at six of Southern Water’s Wastewater Treatment Works on the Solent.

These nutrient removal schemes have introduced a process to remove nitrogen from wastewater using bugs that thrive on methanol and air. This helps prevent the growth of algae that reduces oxygen in the water and threatens wildlife.

Together, these treatment works are capable of processing more than 16 million litres of wastewater every hour, and serve 670,000 people across Hampshire and West Sussex.
