Green solutions

Shells stop the smells at Ham Hill Wastewater Treatment Works.

While laying new water mains across the Solent, for example, it was important to protect the surrounding environment.

The project involved replacing pipelines running under the sea bed of the Solent to transfer drinking water from Hampshire to the Isle of Wight. To lay the pipes, a special tunnelling technique called directional drilling was used to avoid disturbing the sensitive environment on the surface and protect the seabed. "Green" solutions are used on our projects where possible and at Southern Water's Peel Common Wastewater Treatment Works in Hampshire, naturally occurring materials such as bark, wood chips, seaweed or shells were installed in the treatment process to ensure Southern Water is able to remain a good neighbour.
